Heaven. Hell. Angels. Demons. A world of difference? Or a difference of worlds?
The devil’s in the details!
Folks often use the names “Lucifer” and “Satan” as though they were interchangeable and one in the same. They’re not.
Isaiah 14:12 reads: How art though fallen from heaven, o Lucifer, son of the morning. Scholars believe this was a reference to Nebuchadnezzar–King of Babylon.
Lucifer translates as “giver of light” and refers to the morning or evening star. In fact, fallen or evil angels are not mentioned in the Old Testament. However, in Job 4:18, the Lord says that he puts “no trust in his angels” and “charged them with folly” ( which doesn’t sound very angelic, does it?)
St Jerome and other church elders assumed that Lucifer and Satan were the same being. Milton perpetuated the mix-up by naming the demon of pride Lucifer in Paradise Lost. The name is also used by Vondel in an epic poem.
Satan, on the other hand, means “adversary” in Hebrew and is mentioned in Numbers 22:22. Biblical scholars believe the word denotes a position or job–and is not connected to Evil or an evil entity.
Different interpretations and nuances provide lots of ambiguity regarding Satan.
